How often should I review my estate plan?

Heather Kroencke: You should always review an estate plan if you already have one in place. My rule of thumb is any big major event you should take a look at it to make sure it’s still applicable.

So if there is a birth, a death, a marriage or a divorce, it’s a good time to take out your estate plan, your will, your trust, whatever it may be, and see if that’s really how you still want things to happen if you are gone.

There are also constantly changes in the laws with exemption amounts for taxes, new powers of attorney coming up so it’s always a good idea to every 3 to 5 years, to talk to an attorney and make sure that your estate plan is still in order with the way you thought it was.
